Renewable energy development will not stop global warming
Global warming is a key environmental problem of our planet. It carries the threat of flooding a huge part of the land due to the melting of glaciers, with the result that hundreds of millions of people will be left homeless. Developed countries in the fight against climate change are betting on the development of renewable energy. However, experts believe that “green” sources – not a solution. But then how to save the planet?
Renewable energy development is ineffective against climate problems. What is the solution?
Many experts believe that the massive introduction of alternative energy will not save the planet from global warming. In any case, a person needs relatively cheap energy in large quantities. Today, in a number of countries, special quotas are provided for green electricity, they stimulate the production of electric cars, and tax companies that receive electricity from “dirty sources”. However, the real alternative, according to experts, is only one.
After many incidents, nuclear power engineering is simply not considered seriously, and deliberately or accidentally overlooked when discussing the development of “green” technologies. Nuclear reactors are considered too dangerous and are afraid to use them in order to avoid new catastrophes, akin to those that occurred at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant and in Fukushima. However, analysts Stefan Quist and Joshua Goldstein strongly disagree with such an opinion. In February 2019, The Wall Street Journal published an article by experts saying that renewable energy sources are not able to negate climate problems.
Kvist and Goldstein operate with such arguments as insufficient power of wind and solar power stations. In this regard, they require huge areas. According to experts, even if all countries on the planet begin to introduce alternative energy at the same level as Germany, reducing carbon emissions to acceptable will turn out no sooner than 150 years from now. Then it may be too late.
In 2018, the UN published a report stating that people have only 12 years left to protect themselves from a catastrophe. In just 12 years, the climate will change to such an extent that coastal regions will suffer from floods, and the temperate zone will face droughts and crop failure. Therefore, Goldstein and Quist urge to urgently invest in the construction of nuclear power plants. This is the only source that can simultaneously give a huge amount of energy, but at the same time provide zero carbon emissions. Nuclear energy is not afraid of calm and cloudy weather, it can produce electricity day and night, and the production volumes in the summer and winter will be the same. In fact, it meets all the requirements of modern humanity.
